Getting to Know Cuzco - One Day Before Inca Trail

By Allan Yuri Souza - 3:54 PM

Written by J. Warren:

Cuzco is a city of 500,000 sitting high in the Andes—11,500 feet to be exact.  Founded by the Incans, Cuzco eventually became a Spanish capitol when the Conquistadors arrived, resulting in the death of hundreds of thousands of locals (the Incan empire was obliterated). As a result, much of the city seems like an old European town, with many beautiful plazas and churches.

Cuzco is the home to many bustling local markets

As I walked around the city, I became increasingly worried. Walking a few blocks uphill left me panting and my heart racing. I was at high altitude and my body was clearly not loving the change. What was going to happen when I started my hike of the Inca Trail the next day?
